Shipping international airfreight cargo can be more complex than it seems. The first thing to remember is that you can deliver your package via two methods: air cargo or air courier.
If you want to send your cargo via air, you can pick among a wide range of options:
Express international airfreight cargo service:
This is the quickest and most costly method to transport air cargo. The carriers guarantee speedy service, like an expedited delivery, for the cost of a premium. Express air cargo in India is only 2 percent of the global market, yet in accordance with the National Air Cargo Policy released in 2019, it’s one of the sectors that is growing fastest.
Standard international airfreight cargo service :
The delivery could stop at one or two airports, which is where it could be transferred to another plane, or another one might be off-loaded or loaded.
The deferred international airfreight cargo service:
The service allows the shipper to hold off on the shipment of items that are not considered important until space becomes available on the aircraft. It is the most cost-effective savings due to the longer travel time and possibly several stops.
Charters international airfreight cargo service:
If you need to transport a significant amount of cargo quickly, then you could charter a plane. It’s a simple, but costly way to transport your cargo via air.
Think DHL, UPS, DHL, FedEx—couriers that collect your parcel from your doorstep, then ship it via air and take it to its destination. If your item is tiny, less than 1 cubic meter or 45 kilograms, it is best to ship it via courier. The cost of international airfreight courier service is higher in comparison to cargo shipped via air. Due to its quick service, this is also known as express air service.
Estimation of costs for international air freight service:
Cargo Volume and weight of cargo are the two most important factors in calculating air freight. Air freight is priced per kilogram based on the gross (actual) mass or weight in volumetric (dimensional) terms, whichever is greater.
Gross weight: the total weight of the cargo, including pallets and packaging
.Volumetric weight the volume of the cargo is transformed into a weight equivalent. The formula used to calculate volumetric weight is (Length in cm x Width in cm x Height) in centimeters/6000
Additional costs Other than freight, transporting via air generally includes the following costs:
- The fuel surcharge protects air transporters against the impact of price fluctuations. Security fees cover security precautions in airports, typically during handling and screening.
- Warehousing charges for cargo that is temporarily stored at this type of facility prior to entering or leaving a country.
- Terminal handling fees are levied at both the origin and the destination.
- An airport transfer cost has to be paid when cargo is moved from one carrier to the other.
Documentation charges that carriers charge for preparing airway invoices or sending invoice copies a customs brokerage that pays customs officials to clear the cargo if the cargo is subject to examination, which is an additional cost, Dangerous goods, and charges Cargo insurance Delivery and pick-up are freight charges for inland transport of cargo.
Accessorial fees there are numerous, such as an advance notification fee at the time that the recipient is required to be notified prior to delivery, or a limited access fee for locations that are difficult to access for delivery or pick-up locations.
Demurrage charge It is a per-day charge that shipping companies pay for the use of storage facilities, equipment, and spaces in air terminals after the time frame of the storage facility that is allowed for free.
This period of time is referred to as demurrage-free time
Documents needed for International airfreight cargo:

This is an invoice that contains the details of the cargo and is issued following the successful completion of the customs export procedure. This AWB comes in sets of five and comes with the cargo. It is intended to be used by the shipper, the carrier (exporter), as well as the consignee (importer).
There are two kinds of airway bills. The Master Airway Bill (MAWB), which is issued by the air freight forwarder to the carrier upon receipt of the items as a contract to deliver the goods; and the other, the House Airway Bill (HAWB), which is provided by the freight forwarder to the shipper.
Commercial Invoice:
A Contract of Sale is provided by the exporter to the importer. It contains specifics about the shipment, including quantity and value, and their contact numbers. The importer must have this information in order to get the shipment cleared when it arrives.
Shipping Letter of Instruction (SLI):
It is a legal contract between the shipper and the freight forwarder that includes specifics such as the description of the cargo; information about the consignee, shipper, and carrier; destination and departure; the specifics of payment for freight; and more.

Gate passes are also known as “visitor’s passes” or “entrance permits” to the airport.

The process of customs clearance has requirements for documentation. Because these requirements are the same for the ocean and air cargo, check out our blog about the requirements for customs clearance paperwork.
Select the correct pallet for international airfreight cargo service:
International airfreight cargo requires specially constructed containers and pallets commonly referred to as unit loaders (ULDs).
ULD pallets for international airfreight cargo service:
These pallets are sheets made of aluminum, which are used to hold goods stacked. A net is used to cover the goods stacked and stop them from falling. There are a variety of ULD pallets that are specifically designed to fit in certain kinds of aircraft. The most popular ULD pallets include ULD containers.
The majority of the time, the containers are made of aluminum or a mixture made of aluminum and Lexan polycarbonate. They may be equipped with refrigeration systems that can be used for perishable cargo. ULD containers are containers with lower decks or boxes made to be able to accommodate freighters’ space. Like ULD pallets, they are able to accommodate a ULD container that can hold an amount of 6,804 kg.
Strategies for palletized goods when stacking pallets put the heavier items at the bottom, and the lighter ones above, with interlocking layers. Banding and strapping are good options to increase security.
Beware of overhang, which happens when cargo spills over the pallet’s borders
